I’ve always been curious about how things got to be the way they are.
A lot of that curiosity has been focused on history. I have a degree in History, and I’ve never really stopped studying it. I’m especially interested in the parts that don’t always get much attention: local history, old cemeteries, genealogy, forgotten places, and the people and stories that sometimes get left out of the standard version of events.
I’m also a longtime computer and technology guy. I’ve been around computers since the days when using one usually meant you had to understand at least a little about how it worked. I still enjoy older systems, BBSs, early internet technology, retro computing, and the smaller independent corners of the web. I like technology that gives people some control over what they’re doing instead of hiding everything behind a service or an app.
Writing is where a lot of these interests come together.
I write historical fiction, science fiction, speculative fiction, and stories that sometimes wander into the strange or unexplained. History is often somewhere in the background, even when the story itself isn’t strictly historical. I’m interested in questions about memory, time, technology, belief, and the things people think they understand until something comes along that makes them reconsider.
That’s mostly what this site is for.
You’ll find short stories, longer fiction, historical writing, and whatever else I happen to be working on. There isn’t necessarily one neat category that covers all of it, other than these are subjects I’ve spent a good part of my life thinking about.
When I’m not writing, I’m usually playing guitar, researching family history, messing around with old computers, reading something about history, or getting interested in another project that I probably didn’t need.
